Duck and Cover by Lisa Kokin
"This book comes in a metal box with a wooden duck head on top. It harkens back to my childhood in the 1960s when we had to do safety drills called Duck and Cover in case the Soviet Union invaded our little suburban town. We lined up in the hallways with our heads down covered by our arms, feeling a sense of fear and foreboding. Images are vintage magazine photos of children with duct tape on the covers. Making this book, I was remembering the fear instilled in us about totalitarianism, a fear that unfortunately seems all too present in the current state of our country and the world." - Lisa Kokin
